Coa Natural History Museum

The natural history museum project was our second major project for COA. The design utilizes the original Acadia National Park Headquarters building moved to the museum site as a part of this 5,000-square foot facility. The park building is restored on the exterior with adaptive reuse of the interior. The main body of the museum space is in the addition.

One challenge was to develop an appropriate addition without duplicating the original. Another challenge was making both the original building and the addition meet the current standards for ADA and life safety. Our solution provides a two-story structure that is a combination of structural steel framing and wood infill. The interior is designed to provide state-of-the-art exhibition space with flexible lighting systems and a neutral background for the exhibits.
